Don Lowe First Selectman May 12, 2025 Column
Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching and the highlight of it all is the big parade, which steps off at 1pm on Sunday, May 25. There is still time to get your vintage car in the parade, and, for that matter, still time to get your tractor or your horse or anything else Sherman-related in the parade. I am pleased to announce that Senior Master Sergeant (US Air Force –retired) Todd Lobraico, a Sherman resident, will be our keynote speaker at the ceremony which takes place on Veterans Field after the parade. I am also pleased to announce that Sherman historian extraordinaire, John Cilio, will be our Grand Marshal.
Also on Memorial Day weekend is the famous Barn Sale hosted by the Sherman Historical Society. That starts at 9am, but folks from near and far start lining up by 8am or even earlier. You’ll see me in the crosswalk directing pedestrians safely (hopefully!) across Route 37. The barn sale features a wide array of cool used “stuff”. You have to see it to believe it. At the same time, the Sherman Library will hold its remarkable book sale. The barn sale and book sale go from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, May 24, and from 9am to 1pm on Sunday, May 25.
We will have two consecutive Town Meetings next week. The first on Monday, May 19 at 7pm is in Mallory Town Hall and covers expenditures for Happy Acres farm that need voter approval. The second is on Tuesday, May 20 at 7pm in Charter Hall and it asks for voter approval to discontinue the use of what is currently Orange Pepper Road.
By “discontinuing the use”, the Town of Sherman is relieved of maintaining the roadway, and its ownership shifts to the abutting landowners. The road, .6 of mile in length, serviced only one house, and that owner has passed away. His house was subsequently purchased by the Deer Pond Farm/Audubon entity and it has chosen to raze the house and turn the lot into its natural state contiguous with its other natural land holdings. There is no possibility of another home being built on Orange Pepper. In light of this, our Board of Selectmen has come to this decision of discontinuing the road.
I’ve written this before but it bears repeating: its good citizenry of the highest degree to let your First Selectman know where and when and on what the fish are biting best. This is just simply the right thing to do... But seriously folks, enjoy this beautiful weather in the advent of summer and make sure you get outside and take advantage of all of the natural goodness that Sherman has to offer. We sure are lucky to live here!
